All previous efforts in Tuning and Timing can be in vain, if a cost-effective way of getting to the vending machine location regularly is not found. Vending machine service routes can be fixed, or flexible and dynamic.
In Old World Routing, the vending machine service routes are fixed and assigned by contiguous geographical non-overlapping areas to individual vending machine service persons. One area is assigned to one individual vending machine service person. That vending machine service area is then divided into smaller areas of vending machine locations, where one vending machine service person can service each area in a single day. Usually these subdivisions number either five or six, depending upon how many days in a workweek. The advantages of this method include simplicity, short distances between locations, and familiarity (the same person services the same machines on a fixed regular basis). Adding more vending machines to a location, or adding new locations to a service area is problematic. The choice is either overload one vending machine service person, have someone else drive longer distance to service the additional vending machines, or go through and reassign service areas again. What happens when one or more of the vending machine service persons are absent from work?
